Arch Oboler: Old Time Radio Shows Writer and Producer Par Excellence
Born and raised from Chicago, Arch Oboler was well known for his script writing career in radio, and had many other aspects to his career in entertainment. His career covered a range of different entertainment styles, from his main focus on old-time radio script writing, through to producing and directing, and even writing novels. Arch’s career transcended across the growing range of media of the day, graduating from radio to film star and television star too. In 1909, Arch Oboler was born in Illinois’ Chicago. He kick started his writing career from a very young age, as early as high school he was selling radio scripts. He gained greater exposure with his possibly controversial script portrayal of the Adam and Eve story (starring Mae West and Don Ameche).
A majority of the listeners tuning in to the show were obviously upset with the content of the show, and perhaps to add insult to injury, the show aired on Sundays and made reference to the Bible in light-hearted ways. As such, this old time radio show was in quite a spot of bother. Mae West was even as far as banned from radio for many years because of her involvement in the show. By today’s standards, the sketch would have certainly been classified as mild material, but this was not the case in that time. Not for the faint-hearted, the scary stories show ‘Lights Out’ soon made it to the airwaves, with Oboler running the show. In 1939 he was given the show ‘Arch Oboler’s Plays’ where he continued to share horror stories across the air waves.
In addition to his radio work, Oboler appeared in many theatrical productions and in film. Films that he featured in include Gangway for Tomorrow, Escape, and On Our Merry Way. He even directed films like Twonky and Bwana Devil. His political activism grew significantly in the 1940s. He wrote and performed many anti-nazi works. Hollywood stars even wanted to star in the productions, and were happy to do so for union scale pay, as they supported the anti-nazi movement.
Oboler also wrote the Broadway play ‘Night of the Auk’ and the novel ‘House on Fire’. He had a penchant for science fiction and horror and he delivered all of his performances and writings with flair and finesse. His work was often described as gruesome, but that didn’t stop him from having millions of fans. The work of Arch Oboler stood out in his time. His work was always done in a unique manner, which sometimes brought about inevitable controversy, since the time was relatively rife with social taboos. Over his expansive career, his work was incredibly popular, from the early 1930s onwards. Oboler’s most famous of old time radio shows ‘Lights Out’ can still be heard in syndication on some old time radio stations. Oboler’s work did outlive him and continues to be popular even after his death in March 1987. A huge star of old time radio shows, he has many fans that enjoyed the scary stories he had to offer.
