Gaming Laptop Reviews
To get the most out of your money when buying a gaming laptop, you should read reviews from people who have bought them before and how they got along with it. As most people who use gaming laptops are “web savvy” geeks, there are a lot of comments on them. There are even websites dedicated to reviewing gaming laptops and computer hardware.
The Gamers' Words Rule
Don’t just take the makers word for it:
If you are browsing a website, or talking to a store employee about a gaming laptop and they say it’s the best thing since sliced bread, don’t just take there word for it. They are just trying to sell a product. Take the notebook name and search reviews online for them for the real deal. Compare the specifications with other similar laptops, and see if it is reasonably priced. That said, read more than one review. There are bound to be angry rants on there and on the other end of the scale, very cheerful; the majority is usually correct.
Types of reviewers:
There are two types of reviews; one type is the average Joe leaving his comment on what he thought, just because he can. These types of reviews are generally on websites made for leaving feedback, famously on Amazon (.com). 90% of the time they are genuine.
You can tell a nerd when you see one:
When reading through the reviews, you are bound to stumble upon someone who has written a 1000 word review and compared it to every other laptop available. Read it! They know what they are talking about. Don’t get too put off if he (or she) does criticize a lot, it’s only natural for a geek to get hot headed over hardware.
Get around a bit:
If you are going to fork out $1000 + you should get to know the market. Read reviews for other products you normally wouldn’t go for, because you will learn more about the type of gaming laptops. If you don’t understand the lingo people are using then ask Wikipedia.
I’m going to show you an example of sifting through reviews of gaming laptops.
Alienware M17 review feeback:
The manufacturers’ (Alienware) opinion:
Alienware say that this gaming laptop is a new breed of performance, a revolutionary leap in mobile graphics; jaw dropping, and extreme multitasking with even the most resource intensive games and applications. What could be wrong with that?
Professional hardware reviewers:
Decent specs, but you need to upgrade to get the quad core, which bumps the price up massively. That’s a bit nasty don’t you think; clunky design and pricey? It also doesn’t compete very well with other laptops at around the same specs. Not bad, but not the best.
User reviewer 1:
Unreliable, constantly crashes and is a piece of junk. He claimed a $599 laptop down the supermarket worked better. Not a positive review! But don’t base it all on this user; let’s look for some positive reviews.
User reviewer 2:
Great performance for the price, awesome sound quality, great screen resolution. They did also mention that it was like a brick, which is a disadvantage for them.
A summary for the Alienware M17 would have to be:
Unreliable, heavy and huge, but when it does work; it works great. I personally wouldn’t buy it because of the amount of reviews saying it is unreliable, and the battery life is so short. But thanks to the reviews I feel this is a decision well made, and money well saved.
